Halloween 2016

Halloween 2016

Halloween already! This time of year is so crazy. It feels like everything moves at the speed of light. I’m sure it’s because we have a lot going on. Even so, I don’t think I’ll ever get used to how quickly it rushes by–it’s my favorite time of year, after all.

I’m considering this Evangeline’s first true Halloween. She kind of has an idea, if not a concrete opinion, on what’s going on. I asked her several times what she wanted to be and mostly got nothing, unless I offered her suggestions. She’s not even two yet, after all. We settled on Elsa.

She made an adorable little Elsa. I pulled her slightly curly, unruly hair back as best as I could and it’s amazing how much older it makes her look! Needless to say, her hair will be staying down for as long as humanly possible, haha.

We did a mini-photoshoot where she sort of cooperated and then we packed up and headed off to a local trunk-or-treat. I didn’t realize it was such a big deal in this area and even though we got there relatively early, it was packed. There was even a long line to get in! Luckily, this is something they’ve done for years so it was extremely well organized and executed. The line moved quickly.

img_4982I was so proud of Evangeline for being so patient while we waited! She was even great during the run-through, though a bit shy. Towards the end, she was pulling the husband along as she had figured out that the people were giving her candy. It was too cute!

img_5008

We came home and she immediately wanted to go through her candy. We had hoped she wouldn’t realize what it was, but boy did she ever. She refused to relinquish her Hello Kitty basket the entire time we were there and refused to let us carry it for her, even after it was loaded down with candy. She even kept a firm grip on itwhen she was in the car seat afterwards!

img_5049

I gave her a few pieces of candy that she picked out and then when she wasn’t paying attention, the husband and I took the rest away. Those who are barely-two don’t need candy, much less that much candy! It was so cute watching her sort through it curiously, though. She carefully curated her candy and then picked out the ones she either thought were interesting or looked yummy.

On Halloween day, we spent the evening handing out candy to the kids doing trick-or-treat. The husband and I have loved doing this since our first Halloween at the apartment. We missed last year because we were in Key West. The husband dressed up in his costume from last year (which he is in love with; it’s Ezio from Assassin’s Creed) and we had hoped Evangeline would want to dress up, too, but she wasn’t feeling well and so we just watched for awhile. Eventually she felt good enough to stand near husband and check out all the costumes. It was an unusually late night for her, but she was fine and didn’t throw any tantrums despite it. The only fuss we got was when we got home after rushing around just before trick-or-treat and she refused to eat dinner.

She’s caught the cold that’s making the rounds through our house. It hit husband first, then me, and now her. It’s tapering off, thank goodness. Hopefully she’s in much better form when we travel on Friday!

Summer Time Blues

Summer Time Blues

IMG_4163It’s crazy how fast they grow. Evangeline has been changing leaps and bounds since we returned home from Key West! It’s almost as if she’s hit her stride with talking and is learning new words every single day. She’s almost stringing them together, too. She’ll repeat phrases we say, long after we’ve said them, like: “I get you!” is her version of “I’m gonna get you!” It’s cute.

There was a dog waiting at the in-laws when we they got home from our trip so we took Evangeline to meet her. Snoopy passed away in June and he was Eva’s little buddy. She was super excited to meet the new dog–who is on the tail end of being a puppy! The dog is super sweet and very affectionate. She’ll make a fantastic little companion for Evangeline. It’s funny how things work out sometimes. Snoopy will always be missed, but it’s like he sent a little friend so Eva wouldn’t notice his passing…

I’m so proud of the way she treats the new dog (and all animals, honestly!) She’s so gentle and caring. She doesn’t slap, hit, or pull their tails. It’s been a long, hard road of trying to reinforce the behaviors we want her to have towards animals, but it’s paid off immensely. I’m not really a believer in allowing children to do whatever they want to animals because “they’re just kids.” No way. Respect for animals and the things around you is definitely something you teach early on.IMG_4174

It’s hard to believe that we’re almost to the winding down part of summer already. We still have so much more swimming to do! We’ve been trying to take Evangeline to the local park, too. She loves it. It’s got all sorts of swings and several things to climb on. It even has a parent/toddler swing where you can swing with them and see their face. The husband loves that one.

It also has a splash pad, but we haven’t visited it yet. We didn’t even know about it until we arrived at the park! We’re definitely going to try it out. We’ll exhaust the park activities until it’s too cold. Evangeline is on the heavily active part of the scale when it comes to toddlers and if you don’t exhaust her energy, you’re in for a very grumpy little girl. She craves stimuli, whether it be new places, lots of new faces, or fun things to do. She’s going to be interesting as she grows up!

I’m trying really hard right now to get my albums caught up and all of her baby stuff cleaned and packed away. We’re working on our walkway now that we’re back from vacation, too, so that’s taking up a lot of time. The house never really had the chance to get itself into order since we got pregnant within months of moving in, so it’s definitely something I’m trying to continue now. We’ve spent the past year slacking hardcore and I’m ready to get back to fixing things up, etc. The husband has been murmuring about perhaps having another kid and I just can’t even think about it with so many tasks left…

IMG_4197

Never mind the fact that I’m an only child (as is he) and it’s difficult for me to realize that you can love more than one child… I’m trying to imagine it and it’s just so hard. No to mention the lack of space currently, the time we’d lose with Evangeline… arrgh. It’s a discussion for another time. She’s still not even weaned!

July 4th

July 4th

Our fourth of July was rainy and dreary. It was kind of a depressing way to celebrate independence, but then again, the weather was probably a lot more true to the trials and tribulations our forefathers went through to get us there (not to mention the many who died in the pursuit of such freedoms!)

IMG_4144

It was also our first official day back after Key West, so we were pretty “hung over” from traveling almost all day the day before. We chilled out at home and bought some fireworks which were marked down from a tent just outside the grocery store. It wasn’t our intention–we simply went for groceries–but then we saw the tent and it was on! Mortars are legal for us now, but we didn’t buy any.

IMG_4152

Evangeline was enamored with the sparklers. I loved sparklers as a kid and we never really considered how dangerous they were, haha. They burn really hot, so you definitely don’t want to touch them. We kept a close eye on her while we had one, holding onto her arm so she didn’t try to touch it.

IMG_4156

She was not, however, a fan of the bigger fireworks. All the loud bangs, pops, cracks, and definitely the whistles had her screaming in terror. It was hard not to laugh. I tried comforting her and holding her, but she didn’t care one bit. We had some pretty impressive bundles that shot off smaller mortars. I loved them, Evangeline did not.

IMG_4148

I was just thankful we had a brief reprieve from the rain so that we could do this. It had just finished a downpour about ten minutes before we set off any fireworks! It’s been years and years, probably an entire decade, even, since I’ve really had any up-close experience with fireworks. I can’t even remember the last time I went to a show.

It’s really fun experiencing these things again with Evangeline. I love watching her face when she’s going through something new and exciting. As much as I hate to see her grow, I’m happy I get to see the world through her eyes a little. It’s like throwing a fresh coat of paint on something new.

Twelve Months!

Twelve Months!

How, how is this even possible? Wasn’t it just a month ago that she was a newborn? This is just insanity. My sweet baby girl is twelve months old–technically, she’s a toddler now. Where did my baby go?!

IMG_2126

She’s pulling herself up, crawling, and standing. She uses her walker toy all the time now, pushing it back and forth across the living room. When she hits a wall, she looks at us and makes her “grabby hands” for us to turn it around so she can do it all over again. She babbles, says random words, and socializes with everyone. She loves going out and feels ‘cooped up’ if we just lounge around at home all day too often.

She’s curious, observant, headstrong, emotional, determined, and empathetic. Everyone says she looks like me, but I see her daddy in her more and more every day. I’m pretty sure she’s got my temperament, though, which should make things pretty interesting.

Nursing is going well, though she’s tapering off. She’s ill right now, so she’s clingy and wants to nurse forever and a day. She weighs nearly twenty pounds, her head is seventeen inches and five centimeters in diameter, and she’s thirty inches long… ten inches longer than when we brought her home.

IMG_2143

Her birthday (and mine) was technically Thursday, but we celebrated it on Sunday. She spent Veteran’s Day with grandma and grandpa while I ran errands to try and get everything ready. My mum and her boyfriend came down for the party and just left today (Monday.)  Poor thing was sick, but she had a good time. I decorated the kitchen and the living room.

IMG_2150

It wasn’t a huge gathering, just family. There were no overblown thematic items, pony rides, or expensive entertainers. We had a smash cake for Evangeline and a regular cake for everyone else. I had them done by a local bakery and while they may not have been as pretty as some I’ve seen, they were delicious!

IMG_2161

I had an outfit made for her, complete with a ruffly tutu that was just too cute for words! Her ruffly butt was just too cute. It’s still so hard to believe that my little baby is one year old now. A year ago today, we were experiencing our first week as parents and it was rough. Everything was new, scary, and overwhelming.

IMG_2197

Evangeline loved her cake! She pieced at the icing, not really want to rip into it until one of us pierced it with a fork… then she went to town. It was too cute! I didn’t allow her to have too much of the sugar, however. She really hasn’t had much exposure to it yet and I didn’t want her stomach getting more upset than it already was since she was still sick and spiking fevers pretty regularly.

IMG_2219

She seemed to have a really good time, despite her illness. She was jovial and a good sport, opening her presents and suffering through all the fussing people did over her.

IMG_2285

She received a ridiculous amount of gifts. We’re not even sure what we could possibly do for Christmas now! She got a little riding scooter, a ball pit, a xylophone, a smaller compact xylophone, a bouncy cow, an activity table, a beatbo, some books, clothes… basically everything. We really hadn’t anticipated her getting that much stuff! Our house is overrun now. It’s ridiculous.

IMG_2274

The build up to the party seemed to take up a lot more time than the actual party itself. I really loved getting everything together and decorating. I wanted to make sure that when she looked back on this day, she’d remember it fondly through the pictures. It may not have been the ridiculous parties some people plan, but it was perfect for us and she really seemed to enjoy it. Good memories were made–and captured–on that day. I’m keeping a few mementos, along with her cards, to put away in a box for later. What can I say? I’m ridiculous about archiving things!

It’s crazy to think about what this next year will bring! We’re coming into the holiday season now and I’m super excited. From now on, it’s going to be even more exciting. Children always make the holidays ten times better! Soon, I’ll have someone to enjoy Christmas movies with. We’re even acquiring decorations for the house, which is definitely a new territory for us. Hopefully, this puts the husband in the ‘Christmas spirit’, too!

I haven’t cried at all, but I’ve been sad and reflective. It was hitting me today, as I took down the decorations. Everything has just been so hectic lately, I haven’t really had a chance to process it all. I’m sure it’ll smack me hard when I’m filling out the last details of her baby book. Whew.

Can’t Keep Up!

Can't Keep Up!

I have like, zero time to update this anymore. Weekends are packed with errands, trying to clean, and visiting family. Weekdays are full of work, coming home to spend time with Evangeline, and then trying to squeeze out what little personal time or time with the husband I can get after she goes to bed (and usually only if she stays asleep!)

IMG_0254

It’s amazing how much has changed since Evangeline started sitting up. It’s like it opened up a whole new world for her! She loves trying to get at our laptops or keyboards. Sitting with daddy while he’s playing a game on his laptop is a favorite thing for her. She’s also enjoying story time more, trying to touch the interactive pages and noticing what’s on the pages. It’d all a lot of fun.

She doesn’t babble as much as other babies, which kind of sucks, but when she does… it’s pretty constant until she just… stops. She’s too busy watching us talk to join in, I guess. We engage her plenty.

She does this hilarious tremor/wiggle with a noise, “Unnh!!!” whenever she gets excited. Cracks us up! She loves trying to stand, too.

IMG_0267

The husband’s paternal grandparents came down for a visit. It was the first time they’d seen our house. It went well! Everyone loves seeing Evangeline–she’s a fantastic icebreaker, haha. His parents were here, too, so the house was pretty full of people. Eva got a little fussy due to all the chaos, but other than that, she did well.

My mum is coming for a visit soon… we’re both kind of dreading it. I mean, I’m so glad she’s here to be in Eva’s life and everything, but I kind of wish she’d get medicated or at the very least, see a therapist, because she’s becoming progressively hard to deal with. She’s just so… erratic. Oh well. We’re both hoping it will be fine.

It kind of sucks that we’ll have had people here for both three day weekends in the summer, though. We’d intended to try and take a little family trip, but I don’t see that happening now. The husband leaves for Wyoming with his dad on the week of Labor Day in September. We’ll be on our own for a whole week! I remember them discussing the trip forever ago… wow. How are we back here already?
